Since 2010, after April 24th, hundreds of thousands of flowers placed at the Genocide Memorial are being gathered, the stalks of the flowers are cut off from the petals to become compost for the memorial park, and the petals of the flowers are carefully collected and dried to become handmade recycled paper. This event brings together two important ideas – the transformation of the flowers into silent messengers by giving them “second life”, and the environmental concept that promotes recycling.
The idea of recycling flowers at the Genocide memorial shows the responsible attitude towards the environment, as these flowers are given new life, as well as the respectful attitude towards those people who pay tribute to the memory of the victims of Genocide by laying down flowers.
This initiative is symbolic since the recycled handmade paper is donated to the Genocide Museum-Institute which uses it for the thank-you-letters, postcards and certificates, and the compost is being used for cultivation of the Memorial Park land.
